Message to students attending the SMM Biennial Conference in Tampa
Hello dear students:
Time is approaching for the Biennial conference, and therefore in the following weeks you might be receiving lots of news regarding the student workshop agenda, the student travel grants that will be awarded, and other activities we are planning for students.
In the meantime, I just want to send another reminder about arranging your travels and accommodation with time in advance.
As I said a few months ago, unfortunately it has not been easy to find safe and close-by accommodation (hostels and/or hotels) near the Conference center in Tampa. It is not advisable to stay in downtown especially commuting back and forth on a bus at, since the schedule for the conference will run until late every day.
For this reason, the conference committee strongly recommends that students share a double room at the conference hotel:
Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina (If this link doesn't work, please visit the Travel & Lodging page)
I know just the word "Marriott" is a scary one for all of us, but upon booking a room, there is a special rate as an "attendee" to the conference and there is a possibility of having up to four students in a room. Therefore, the cost can be shared. If many students agree on this option, we will come up with an alternative of organizing a chart online so that students that are making arrangements on their own, can pair-up with other students in the same room (for example, according to gender, country, etc).
Please feel free to send me your comments on this regard to ic77@st- andrews.ac.uk
Have a great day,
Inez

Gulf Coast Student Chapter's 2nd Annual Student Research Symposium August 27-28, 2011
The Gulf Coast Student Chapter of the Society for Marine Mammalogy is pleased to announce its 2nd Annual Student Research Symposium to be held at the University of Southern Mississippi's Thad Cochran Center in Hattiesburg, MS, August 27-28th, 2011.
An icebreaker event is planned for the evening of August 26th.
This meeting is intended to facilitate and foster scientific discussion and collaboration among marine mammal students and professionals working in the Gulf Coast region. Whether you are an established professional or student, undergraduate or graduate, we invite you to attend!
This year's symposium features a keynote address by Dr. Ruth Carmichael, Senior Marine Scientist of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Assistant Professor of Marine Science at the University of Southern Alabama. Dr. Carmichael's research focuses on West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) population ecology in Alabama waters. Also on the agenda are student research presentations and workshops geared toward professional development - including a MATLAB introductory workshop. Following the symposium, attendees are welcome to join GCSC members for an afternoon of canoeing down the Okatoma Creek.
If you are interested in attending, please submit your registration form and abstract no later than 5:00 pm ET Friday, August 5th, to Courtney Smith at Courtney.e.smith@eagles.usm.edu. Presentation space is limited, and priority will be given to students. Following the guidelines for the traditional SMM Biennial talks, student presentations should be no longer than 12 minutes (followed by 3 minutes for questions). We encourage students working in the Gulf Coast region to present their research, regardless of the stage of the project.
For those students traveling long distances to join us, we have a limited number of free accommodations that may be arranged with local students. Please note the need for accommodations on your registration form and we suggest you register early, as space is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Any further details pertaining to this event will be posted on our website. Please contact Courtney Smith at the above email address if you have any questions regarding the symposium.
We look forward to seeing you!

Attention Students: The Society needs you!!!
Written by Inez Campbell
Get involved now!
Attention student members of the Society for Marine Mammology: the Board is requesting that you get involved in one of the standing committees. Each committee should have at least one student member.
We are seeking an indication of interest from students, and committee chairs will draw from the pool of interested students to put forward individuals for Board consideration as potential committee members.
It is very exciting as it lets you get actively and directly involved with issues regarding the Society and enact one of its main purposes: to evaluate and promote the educational, scientific and managerial advancement of marine mammal science.

Another Year for the Gulf Coast Student Chapter
2010 was a busy year for GCSC members! Check out our Annual Report to see all of the various activities we participated in over the last year.
1st Annual Student Research Symposium - Texas A&M, Galveston - 2010 Abstract Book
As our chapter members may be in multiple states at any given time, our monthly or bimonthly chapter meetings occur via phone or internet conferences. These meetings are an opportunity for all GCSC members to coordinate and plan community service and educational outreach events that we participate in throughout the Gulf Coast region. Please contact the GCSC student administrators if you would like to attend the next chapter meeting.
