Students in the Pacific Northwest have been meeting almost every year since 1996. Students during these early gatherings provided the inspriration and impetus for the eventual formation of SMM student chapters.

Since its formal institution in 1999, the NWSSMM has been meeting annually, with the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences at the University of Washington (UW) and the Marine Mammal Research Unit at the University of British Columbia (UBC) traditionally alternating as host locations.

The relatively new Marine Behavior and Ecology Lab at Western Washington University (WWU) graciously offered to host a meeting for the first time in 2006 and has since been a part of the meeting rotation. The 2014 meeting is due to be held at Western Washington University in early May.
